Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist will not be defending her title when the British Amateur Championship is played at Royal St David’s Golf Club in Wales next June.

Finishing in the top 30 at the LPGA Tour School this weekend, Anna has decided to join the professional ranks after a very successful amateur career. Anna won the British Girls title in 2005 and was runner up in the British Amateur in 2006 & 2007 before lifting the trophy and gold medal in June.

As Amateur Champion, Anna was then invited by the LGU to compete in the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Sunningdale where, as the leading Amateur player, she won the Smyth Salver.

The Swedish player will not be returning to Arizona State University.

’I think I have a good enough ranking on the LPGA Tour to get me into enough events in 2009. I have enjoyed myself very much as an amateur golfer. Now a new career as a professional is about to begin.’
